Quicky post – Another frozen yogurt joint

Hey, I’m going to do a quick post on a new frozen yogurt store in La Jolla called Frutti Yogurt. It’s located in the little plaza area down the hill from Whole Foods. Tucked in with the International Market and Grill and The Yummy Bento Box (?). The decor is simplistic but clean, refreshing, and “tries to be hip but doesn’t over do it.”

I love this place’s use of light everywhere. The light up counter was a nice touch. And here’s the toppings bar where they have a variety of jellies, fruits, cereal, and traditional ice cream toppings too.624274126_163d16159f.jpg

And this is the counter where the magic of Fro-Yo happens! They have 4 flavors: Plain, Green Tea, Taro, and Raspberry-Pomegranate. I didn’t try the plain or green tea flavors, but I did try the other two. Actually, even though I ended up choosing taro – which was actually not that overpowering as most anything taro are – I found the raspberry-pomegranate to taste better of the two.

Ok, so this place works like any other (non-self-serve) yogurt joint: You pick a size, one flavor, and one topping. Any additional toppings will cost you about $0.55 I think, I can’t remember…in fact this was several weeks ago so I can’t really remember the prices for the other cup sizes but for my yogurt (a small cup with one topping) it cost $3.75.

The taro flavor I got was subtle and the yogurt base was actually fairly icy. It was really hot so it was highly welcomed. With my yogurt, I choose the mango star-shape jellies. I thought Frutti Yogurt was not that bad especially if you want a cool dessert on a hot summer day. However, I prefer Yogurt World on Convoy over Frutti but Frutti gets brownie points for their not too sweet taro yogurt. Also, the woman that was working that day was very friendly and was more than happy to let me take pictures of the store after I told her what it was for. So if you are in the La Jolla area, come here for a quick, cool treat!

  1. Dear May-Chan!
    Greetings!
    Interesting concept!
We don’t really have frozen yogurt in Japan and even less frozen yogurt joints!
My impression is that they have decorated their place according to their merchandise, which is a zany but pertinent idea!
The fact that their staff are friendly is definitely a boon!
I’ll see if I can experiment a bit.
I Shizuoka we can buy yogurt drinks on the Internet. I usually leave some in the fridge ovenight fraining through a coffee paper filter and eat the solid yogurt left in the morning. Wonder what will happen if I freeze it!
    Cheers,
    Robert-Gilles

  2. Hi May-chan – Another example of how Fro-yo is conquering the world! Love your posts, keep up the great work.

    Greeting Robert!
I’ve never personally try to make yogurt, only seen it. But the yogurt drinks you speak of…I always have an ample supply of it at my house because I am addicted to it! And when my friend introduced me to soju, the Korean equivalent of sake, mixed with the yogurt drink…I found this “adult version” even more addicting.
And for these yogurt places that are popping up everywhere here in California, I’ve heard and seen people buy yogurt by the quarts to take home, freeze, and enjoy at their own leisure! Perhaps I should start doing the same instead of having to drive to a yogurt place everytime I want some.

    Hello Kirk!
Fro-yo is the next “starbucks” or since it’s a frozen treat…I guess it would be more appropriate to call it the next “baskin-robbins?” But now, there’s even a Fro-yo place in downtown on 5th ave, which isn’t any good so I’d rather go to one of the MANY gelaterias in downtown.

There’s not much on this new Fro-yo place (it’s called Fruberry), but here’s the yelp link to it: http://www.yelp.com/biz/nVTZEhO_e2qUOqVwVv0DsQ

  5. Have you tried Yogurt Express yet? Its an exit past SDSU on Lake Murray Blvd.

Self served, 25cents an ounce plus student discount (i think its 20 or 25% off), and whatever toppings you want! Hooray!

Yes and that place is evil because it’s so close to the school! But not so close that I would have to leave all cash and cards behind just so I won’t end up spending all my money there, lol!

I think it was because Yogurt Express introduced me to the self-serve concept for yogurt, any place that won’t let me mix, fill and top my yogurt JUST that way I want…I just don’t love it as much.

Has anyone tried Cefiore? I’ve found it to be the most consistent with friendly service, freshness of the fruit and cleanliness. Plus the italian LaVazza coffee is a bonus.

Hi Victoria. Yes! I have tried Cefiore! The decor in Fruitti Yogurt reminds me of the outlet in LA, as well as their product now that you mention it! But these yogurt joints are really popping up EVERYWHERE. It’s a yogurt frenzy! Not that I mind, but like with everything else…everyone has their favorites!

Great to see you checking out the yogurt scene. Have you tried Yog-Art in Hillcrest? Great stuff, the taro is especially good.
