Mama MIA! That’s a good cannoli!!
Ever since I had my very first cannoli back at the bakery I used to work at, I have been in love with this Sicilian dessert. My favorite version in San Diego comes from Solunto in Little Italy. They come in 2 sizes (large and mini) and when they say mini, they REALLY mean “mini”.
I love Solunto because they are filled to order!! There is nothing sadder than a pre-filled cannoli, sitting in a case and hoping that someone will buy them as their shell gets soggy. How hard can it be for someone to understand that you need to make this dessert to order?
A cannoli is a fried pastry dough, shaped into a tube, then filled with a sweetened ricotta cheese that is mixed with candied fruit peel. It can be orange or lemon, but my preference is to mix in mini chocolate chips. Now…combine that ricotta mixture with a pastry dough, add a little time…what do you get? One limpy, soggy, sad dough with sweet mixture. See? So when you see a pre-filled cannoli, just say ‘NO!’
